What I purchased was a large piece of parachute fabric that had completed its original purpose. It is characterized by being lightweight and strong. Although they look very similar, they are a mixture of two types: ripstop fabric, which is woven with threads in a grid pattern to prevent tears, and non-rip fabric, which is plain woven. We have developed several products that combine this fabric with handles made from recycled dead stock and used industrial belts. The material was found in a certain town in India. In an area where military surplus goods are distributed, I visited a small specialty store where used fabrics were piled up to the ceiling. I don't know if I could even call this a store because the inside is so stuffed with fabric that there's no place to step. Guided by the man in the store, I climbed up the huge pile of fabric and moved through it, searching for something that was neither this nor that. I have an attachment to this material that cannot be expressed in words, as I have spent hours struggling with it, as if exploring a cave.
