"What if we made an apron out of the flags they use for ships? The original flags each had an alphabet letter on them and were used to express words by matching the letters (flags) together. We wanted to take something with an extraordinary purpose and turn it into an ordinary, practical item. We were first drawn to the cast iron parts designed to easily connect ropes together without it coming undone. The desire to remake this dynamic yet delicate part is what led us to this item. We then selected cloth that doesn't easily fade but also feels like a flag. It turned out that it was difficult to match the quality of the original cast iron parts. The aluminum we used instead is not as sensitive as the cast iron but it made them more light weight. The final product came out of the conflict between reproducing the original and developing a new product."
