When asked, "What is the staple food of India?", many Japanese people think of "naan," but in fact, in ordinary Indian households, "chapati" is a thin, flat, baked dish made from whole wheat dough. Apparently, on celebrations and festivals, chapati are decorated with patterns to add a touch of elegance to the dining table, and this stand was made for that purpose. The intricate patterns are hand-carved into the stone. While people outside of India may not make chapatis frequently, they also make a great trivet or flowerpot stand.
